Tesla Launches Cheapest Model 3 in Hong Kong at HK$205,000
Tesla has unexpectedly introduced a lower-cost version of the Model 3 in Hong Kong and Macau, creating the company’s most affordable new vehicle in the market to date.
Launched on August 30, the new Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive Standard Version starts at HK$205,000, equivalent to roughly RMB 176,000. The variant is currently exclusive to Hong Kong and Macau and sits significantly below the approximately RMB 230,000 price of the Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive sold in Mainland China.
Tesla describes the new configuration as its most economical vehicle with the lowest long-term cost of ownership. The lower price comes primarily from reducing interior and comfort equipment rather than making major changes to the vehicle’s core electric powertrain, battery technology, computing hardware, or driver-assistance platform.
🚗 Model 3 Standard Cuts Equipment to Reach a Lower Price #
The Hong Kong and Macau Standard Version is positioned as an entry-level trim, while the corresponding Mainland China Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive is a higher-spec Premium configuration.
Most of the cost reductions are concentrated in the cabin.
Interior and seating #
The Standard Version replaces the synthetic-leather seats with more basic eco-friendly fabric upholstery. Front-seat heating is retained, but front-seat ventilation and rear-seat heating are removed.
Tesla has also simplified several interior trim elements.
Audio and rear display #
The audio system is reduced from a nine-speaker configuration to a seven-speaker standard system.
The 8-inch rear entertainment display is also removed, leaving the 15.4-inch central touchscreen as the primary in-car display.
Controls and ambient lighting #
The 256-color ambient lighting system is deleted, while steering-wheel adjustment is changed from a powered configuration to manual adjustment.
These changes reduce equipment levels without fundamentally altering the Model 3’s underlying vehicle architecture.
âš¡ Core EV Hardware Remains Largely Unchanged #
Despite the lower equipment level, the most important EV components remain broadly comparable with the Mainland China Rear-Wheel Drive version.

The performance differences are minimal. Acceleration differs by only 0.1 seconds, while the quoted WLTP range is essentially the same.
This makes the new Model 3 Standard notably different from a typical entry-level vehicle strategy in which manufacturers substantially reduce battery or motor specifications to lower the sticker price. Tesla has instead concentrated the reductions on non-essential equipment.
🔋 Charging Performance Is Surprisingly Strong #
The Hong Kong and Macau Standard Version also posts an interesting charging figure.
Tesla states that the vehicle can add 286 km of range in 15 minutes of charging, compared with approximately 250 km in 15 minutes for the Mainland China Rear-Wheel Drive version.
If these figures are measured under comparable conditions, the higher stated charging gain suggests that the lower-priced configuration does not necessarily sacrifice charging performance along with its reduced cabin equipment.
The underlying LFP battery architecture also remains close to that of the Mainland model, although Tesla’s regional specifications do not provide every battery detail in identical form.
🧠HW4 and Driver Assistance Are Not Downgraded #
The cost reduction is even more notable because Tesla has retained key computing and driver-assistance hardware.
The Hong Kong and Macau Standard Version continues to use HW4.0 autonomous-driving hardware and the AMD-based infotainment computing platform.
Basic driver-assistance functions also remain available, including:
- Automatic Emergency Braking
- Lane Assist
- Forward Collision Warning
- Other standard active-safety functions
In other words, Tesla has largely avoided cutting the technology that directly affects the vehicle’s underlying driving and computing capabilities.
The result is a Model 3 with a significantly lower equipment level but broadly comparable core EV and electronic architecture.
💰 Could the Model 3 Standard Fall Below RMB 180,000 in Mainland China? #
The biggest unanswered question is whether Tesla will eventually bring this lower-cost Model 3 configuration to Mainland China.
The current Mainland China Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive is priced at approximately RMB 230,000, creating a substantial gap with the Hong Kong and Macau Standard Version at the equivalent of roughly RMB 176,000.
If Tesla were to introduce a similarly configured Standard Version in Mainland China, a domestic price below RMB 180,000 could become possible.
However, there is currently no confirmed indication that Tesla will launch this exact configuration in Mainland China. Pricing would also depend on local production, taxes, equipment differences, battery sourcing, and Tesla’s regional product strategy.
For now, the Hong Kong and Macau Model 3 Standard represents a clear shift in Tesla’s pricing strategy: strip out expensive comfort and entertainment features while preserving the core EV platform, computing hardware, and safety systems.
That approach could make the Model 3 considerably more competitive in the entry-level EV market if Tesla eventually expands the configuration to Mainland China.
